POSITION: Banquet Captain

REPORTS TO: Meetings & Events Manager

POSITION SUMMARY: The Banquet Captain directly supervises catered events. This includes the set-up, execution and tear down of all events. The Banquet Captain stays in contact with the host (on-site contact) throughout the event to ensure the highest guest satisfaction possible. All duties are to be performed in accordance with British Columbia laws and regulations, policies, practices and procedures.

JOB DESCRIPTION DETAIL: but not limited to

  • Prepare assignments for staff assigned to each event. Includes assignments for each portion of the work shift; including set-up, service, event tear-down and side work.
  • Works closely with Meetings & Events Manager.
  • Ensure front and back of the house are maintained in a clean and orderly fashion.
  • Know the menu for each function served and be able to explain the major ingredients and preparation methods for each item to be served.
  • Promotes and maintains the highest level of customer service to all guests.
  • Resolves guest complaints within scope of authority; otherwise refers the matter to management. Notifies supervisor and/or security of all unusual events, circumstances, missing items or alleged thefts.
  • They monitor the activities of workers and guests and respond to questions, complaints, or comments that may arise, tables are decorated correctly, the food is presented well, and service goes off without a hitch.
  • Attends all staff meetings as required by management.
  • Banquet captains are the front of house for these events, making sure that the rooms are set correctly, during the event, they interact with the host to respond to any special requests or last-minute adjustments.
  • Assists in training new staff members
  • Assists in ordering items as needed for the banquet floor: pop, juice, creamer, chaffing fuels, teas etc. Conducting monthly inventory and noting items that are getting low
  • Ordering weekly linens for function: Ordered by Wednesday and delivered on Friday
  • They are the liaison to the chefs and cooking staff in the back, letting them know what food needs to be replenished
  • Examine the cleanliness of the venue, such as the condition of the bathrooms, prior to a function.
  • Banquet Captains have to interact with customers. Being friendly and courteous is needed.
  • Attention to Detail: Banquet captains have to keep their eyes on a lot of elements: food standards, costs, safety, etc.
  • Leadership: Banquet captains must be leaders, rallying their team during big events, resolving conflicts and getting the job done.
  • Speaking Skills: Banquet captains need to accurately and easily communicate standards and cooking methods to staff, give orders and speak with customers clearly.
  • Stamina: Continuous physical movement during work hours, some physical strength required to move tables and chairs during set up.
