The Role

Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge is a 400+ room Autograph Collection by Marriott, located 60 minutes west of Calgary International Airport. As the Director of Banquets, you will have oversight of our premium meeting and catering spaces. The role is accountable for the people, quality and financial results of the Banquets Division. The short-term focus will be on rebuilding the department to meet the high demand of summer and fall high season and raise Guest Feedback scores across the division. A strong background in high volume premium catering and food & beverage excellence is crucial for success. Key Focuses

  • Engages team members to deliver picture-perfect results in guest and public areas, owning the banquet guest service and employee experience by monitoring and addressing the cleanliness and readiness of all areas and departments.
  • Responsible for leading all recruitment in the department, able to make staffing changes hiring the right people to fill the right positions.
  • Organizational orientation, training and hiring practices are executed properly.
  • Takes ownership of their department by ensuring that operations runs smoothly and that the highest level of service is provided to all guests at all times. Accountable both personally and through their team to oversee the full cycle event management. From set-up and service of contracted functions in the hotel.
  • Attends pre-event and BEO meetings to understand group needs, set appropriate expectations and gather critical information to communicate to Banquet Team. Ensuring promises made are promises.
  • Trains and evaluates their people in accordance with the standards of the company policies and guidelines. Understands that we never get a second chance to make a first impression and provides consistent, real-time feedback to all employees on appearance, attitude, service delivery and degree of professionalism.
  • Takes ownership of their department by analyzing monthly financial results and guest feedback to create action plans for the department to improve outcomes falling short of expectations and enhance results exceeding expectations, striving for continuous improvement in all aspects of the business.
  • Decision making skills are advanced. Identifies problem, gathers information, develops and selects best alternative, implements, measures and evaluates. Problems are fixed once; before their leader is even aware.
  • Work with Sales Department to ensure proper coordination and distribution of applicable information concerning convention clients.
  • Work closely with Front Office and Reservations Departments pertaining to guest’s arrival details.
  • Work closely with the culinary department to ensure lines of communication are open and that clients' needs are met.
  • Create and maintain optimal staffing levels to deliver outstanding service during all functions.
  • Ensure responsible alcoholic beverage service is practiced at all times. Strictly adhere to all regulations regarding food & alcohol service. (pro-serve)
  • Connects meaningfully with their people; understands that their people are their customers, and does not fail to keep promises.
  • Assigned deliverables are executed in a manner that requires little or no follow-up, both in terms of timeliness, scope and quality.

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in food & beverage or banquets in a Hotel or related industry.
  • Proven sales performance experience in meeting and exceeding sales revenue goals.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Comfortable with technology and open to new learning.
  • Excellent eye for quality, cleanliness and detail.
  • Ability to multi-task, produce accurate work against hard deadlines.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands:

Due to the cyclical nature of the banquet operations, the Director of Banquets may be exposed to long shifts that include late hours, weekends, and holidays. This position is set in a fast-paced environment, with high levels of interaction with guests, employees, and other stakeholders. The Director of Banquets will spend a lot of time on their feet, multitasking competing priorities, effectively dealing with confrontation from employees and guests and leading a culture of service excellence.
